Uniform

We have moved to a more local uniform provider. Speed Stitch is a family-run business based in Walthamstow, and you will be able to purchase your child’s uniform from them as of Monday 31st January 2022.

Speed Stitch offers several different ways of purchasing the uniform which include click and collect, face-to-face, and an online shop. Please find their details below.

This will mean that there will no longer be any uniform shop available at Buxton school on a Tuesday.

The school strongly believes in an ethical Dress Code for all pupils from the Nursery to Year 11, maintaining the very highest standards of dress and appearance appropriate to the learning environment. Standards will be best achieved by the full commitment of all pupils, staff, parents and Governors to the following agreed principles and practices.

School uniform is perceived by parents, employers and members of the local community as improving discipline, raising standards and reducing peer pressure and bullying. Uniform also instils a sense of identity, community and pride in our school amongst pupils.

We want our pupils to leave Buxton School with the best possible opportunities so it is important that we maintain our good reputation in the local community. We emphasise to our pupils that they are ambassadors for Buxton School, and how they dress, behave, and speak in public has consequences for our public image.

We have a simple ethical Dress Code which appeals to young people, but which is smart and instantly associated with Buxton School.

In deciding on our Dress Code, the Governing Body has given a high priority to cost considerations. We accept that school uniform should not be so expensive as to leave pupils or their families feeling socially excluded.

This applies both to existing and prospective pupils. It is not acceptable for parents of prospective pupils to be deterred from applying to the school of their choice because they are unable to meet the cost of the school uniform. However, we are also keen not to support suppliers who may be sourcing uniform items from those using questionable sources of labour.

Parents have a crucial role to play in supporting their children in schools and getting the best possible start in life, and we welcome their support for our Dress Code which clearly has an impact on supporting good behaviour and high standards in our school.

In Conclusion

School uniform is viewed as a mark of the school’s values. Pupils who do not adhere to our dress code are regarded as undermining the authority of the school. We, therefore, expect the utmost co-operation from parents. Our uniform is affordable and comfortable so we expect all pupils to wear it at all times, including to and from school.

Infringements of the school’s dress code are discussed with primary parents and within the secondary phase are recorded and monitored and action taken. This can include providing a pupil with alternative clothing for the day, telephoning parents to bring a change of clothing to school, or arranging for a pupil to go home to change.

All items are available from the school and some items are available from clothing outlets in the local area. It is important that the spirit of the uniform is adhered to and fashion items should not be purchased as replacements for the official uniform.

We advise that all clothing and other items should be clearly marked with the pupil’s name. Labelling must be durable for washing and cleaning purposes. The school has no legal liability for lost or stolen clothing or other items of equipment. Confiscated items in the primary phase will be expected to be collected from the class teacher and lost property can be sought for any missing items. In the secondary phase confiscated items can be kept until the following half-term. Lost property can be kept until the following half-term break.

Parents and pupils are urged to note and follow the spirit as well as the letter of our Dress Code. Our aim is simply to give all pupils the opportunity to look smartly and appropriately dressed for school in a style that is of reasonable cost and durability.
