About Buxton PDF Print E-mail

Buxton School is a 3 -16 school situated at the southern end of the London Borough of Waltham Forest, bordering the edge of Newham  Approximately 35% of our pupils are eligible for free school meals, speak English as an additional language and have special needs.  It is a challenging environment.  However, our KS2 results stand at over 90% L4 and above, and our GCSE results reached 48% last summer, our best ever results.

We became a National Challenge school in 2008 when our 5 A*-C GCSE results, including English and maths, fell to 29.4%, just one pupil short of the national benchmark.  This was very disappointing for us against 2006 League tables which showed us to
be one of the top performing schools in the country, based on the progress that pupils make between Year 7 and Year 11.

The school has been named as one of the ‘Top 100 Most Improved Schools’ nationally, and we have been awarded three School Achievement Awards in recent years.  In 2009 our results (5A*- C GCSEs including English
and maths) improved by 13% to 42% and we predict that our results will increase even further this summer.

The governing bodies of Cann Hall Primary School and Tom Hood Community Science College federated in September 2008 and formally amalgamated in January 2010 as Buxton School with a new leadership and management structure.

We also achieved ‘Trust’ status on January 1st 2010 in partnership with the Acacia Children’s Centre, Jenny Hammond Primary School, the University of East London, NHS Waltham Forest and Waltham Forest Council.
We believe that we can transform the learning of generations of children by having the full age range of children on one site led by staff and supported by a community who share common values, learning and curriculum aims, policies and practices in an all through school. We aspire to become a leading edge learning community in the field of all through education.

Over the past five years the school has developed and moved forward considerably.  Our main focus has been, and will continue to be, the raising of pupil attainment through excellence in the classroom and all staff joining the school are expected to be fully committed to this.  The secondary phase was inspected in June 2009 and the report states that the school is, ‘a satisfactory and improving school.

The school has made a number of recent improvements and has many good features. ‘Also, that ‘Students and parents value the school’s strongly inclusive ethos and the commitment of staff to helping them overcome any difficulties.’

This really is a very exciting time for Buxton School and our whole community.
