Two impressive schools....

2009 – 2010 is a very big year for Cann Hall and Tom Hood.  From 1st January 2010, Cann Hall and Tom Hood became one and reopened as a new school, Buxton.
The schools already share a successful history and together will provide a successful future for children in South Leytonstone.

Cann Hall Primary School was a large modern primary school set in attractive grounds in the south of the Borough.
It has a relatively new building and its light and open plan design, lends itself to team teaching and co-operative learning providing a very supportive atmosphere for pupils and staff alike.

The school has a diverse community, both staff and children, celebrating and embracing a variety of cultures and ethnic groups, with over forty home languages spoken.
The school is known for our inclusive practice, nurturing and developing young children and working closely with their families.

The staff consists of 35 teachers, backed by a range of specialist support staff including a School Counselor, Learning Mentor, Learning Support Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and Nursery Nurse.
The school is supported by an experienced administration team and cleaning team, all of whom work closely as part of the school community.

As an Extended School, it provides very high quality facilities including two computer suites, two halls and a Library Resource area. It also utilises the grounds to enable the children to work in and link with their environmental and science studies.
This year our results in Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 met and exceeded both Local Authority and National Averages across the three Key Stages.
Historically Ofsted has described the overall effectiveness of the school as ‘good with elements of outstanding’. We strive to maintain and exceed this.  Over the last two years, the school has achieved Healthy Schools Status, FMSIS, Silver Arts Mark and values the recognition of Investors in People, reflecting the school’s commitment to the whole community of learning.

Tom Hood formed the secondary phase of Buxton and  are proud of, and value the diversity of languages, cultures and ethnicity in the school with over 30 ethnic groups represented.

In addition to over 50 teachers, there is a large number of staff who can work with individual pupils, small groups or support the work of classroom teachers during lessons.
These include Learning Support Assistants, a School Counselor, Learning Mentors, a Speech and Language therapist and a Home/School Liaison Officer. We are well staffed with administrative and technical personnel, all of whom play a key role in school life.

With Specialist School status in Science and Maths, it brings very positive benefits to the school and our partners. Our extended school status has enabled us to develop a wide range of services to benefit not only the school but the local community as well.

These include childcare, health care, extended sports and arts provision, study support and family learning.
The school is built on a spacious site and includes extensive hard play areas, an all weather pitch and our community garden.  There are six main blocks:

  • Music room and Drama studio

  • Practical Block

  • Gymnasium

  • Sports Hall

  • Main Teaching Block

In addition, there are 7 science labs, a technology area housing Food Technology, Design Technology, Textiles and Art and excellent ICT facilities with 200 computers situated in a modern suite of rooms and in other areas around the school.  We also have a fully equipped Learning Resource Centre with a large modern book stock, internet access, journals and magazines.

In 2009, our results (5A*- C GCSEs including English and maths) improved by 13% to 42% and we predict that our 5 A*- C GCSE results will increase even further next summer.
This made us the most improved school in Waltham Forest and one of the most improved schools in London. It was also the reason that the school featured on BBC Radio London and on ITV National and London news on Results Day!
