Two impressive schools.... 2009 – 2010 is a very big year for Cann Hall and Tom Hood. From 1st January 2010, Cann Hall and Tom Hood became one and reopened as a new school, Buxton. Cann Hall Primary School was a large modern primary school set in attractive grounds in the south of the Borough. The school has a diverse community, both staff and children, celebrating and embracing a variety of cultures and ethnic groups, with over forty home languages spoken. The staff consists of 35 teachers, backed by a range of specialist support staff including a School Counselor, Learning Mentor, Learning Support Assistants, Teaching Assistants, and Nursery Nurse. As an Extended School, it provides very high quality facilities including two computer suites, two halls and a Library Resource area. It also utilises the grounds to enable the children to work in and link with their environmental and science studies. Tom Hood formed the secondary phase of Buxton and are proud of, and value the diversity of languages, cultures and ethnicity in the school with over 30 ethnic groups represented. In addition to over 50 teachers, there is a large number of staff who can work with individual pupils, small groups or support the work of classroom teachers during lessons. With Specialist School status in Science and Maths, it brings very positive benefits to the school and our partners. Our extended school status has enabled us to develop a wide range of services to benefit not only the school but the local community as well. These include childcare, health care, extended sports and arts provision, study support and family learning.
In addition, there are 7 science labs, a technology area housing Food Technology, Design Technology, Textiles and Art and excellent ICT facilities with 200 computers situated in a modern suite of rooms and in other areas around the school. We also have a fully equipped Learning Resource Centre with a large modern book stock, internet access, journals and magazines. In 2009, our results (5A*- C GCSEs including English and maths) improved by 13% to 42% and we predict that our 5 A*- C GCSE results will increase even further next summer.
