Buxton Extra Summer Programme - Forward

The informal curriculum offered within the Extended Services supports, and is inextricably linked to, the fundamental aims of formal education. It offers young people “support for learning, adventures of self discovery, journeys into new ways of knowing and realisation of hidden talents. It is about achievement that follows naturally when young people have the self confidence and resilience to cope with setbacks. It is about extending opportunities, whether through supportive parents or planned activities where the vital ingredients of success are both short and long term”. Extended schools services are also key points of delivery for achieving the five Every Child Matters outcomes and raising standards of achievement.

Often projects such as Buxton’s Summer Programme are perceived as merely “keeping young people off the streets”.  Much more than this, Informal Learning is intrinsically attributed to facilitating young people’s development, supports their potential for learning and invigorates their aspirations. It supports their “growth through dependence to interdependence, by encouraging their personal and social development and enabling them to have a voice, influence and a place in their communities and society”.

This summer, Buxton School’s Extended Services built upon an established and successful history by offering choice, accountability and accessibility to young people whilst at the same time met the economic and domestic needs of the local community. With funding from the Youth Offer (LBWF) and the Council Pledge the summer programme offered young people a diverse and comprehensive curriculum including the choice of 320 sessions over 4 weeks (Monday to Friday).

With an equal emphasis on safeguarding, voluntary participation and accessibility this approach resulted in an unprecedented attendance of over 500 individual young people from 100 different schools within the South East choosing to participate in this summer’s programme. The role of the Extended School Services Team was to keep safe, engage, empower and inspire young people and their parents within our community. T

The future of Extended Services funding is uncertain. However, by involving a wide range of organisations from the voluntary, community and private sectors and building on the best of what is currently provided will undoubtedly increase choice and secure the best outcomes for young people in the future.
