Mathematics

Our mathematics curriculum is meticulously designed to ensure that pupils learn through carefully structured small steps, enabling them to build and sustain confidence in their mathematical abilities. We aim to provide pupils with a deep understanding of the subject by incorporating a concrete, pictorial, and abstract approach, allowing them to grasp the underlying concepts rather than merely repeating routines.

Problem-solving lies at the heart of our curriculum, combined with daily practice of fluency skills, as each aspect supports the development of the other. Gradually, our pupils learn to master the various elements of the mathematics curriculum and identify the connections between them. This foundation fosters knowledge, understanding, and confidence, facilitating deep and sustained learning.

There are three key features of our primary mathematics programme that equip pupils with a profound understanding of the subject:

  1. Objects, Pictures, and Symbols: Children begin by using concrete manipulatives (objects) such as counters and Dienes blocks, and pictorial representations (pictures). They then transition to abstract symbols (numbers and signs) to solidify their understanding.
  2. Language Development: The way children speak and write about mathematics significantly impacts their success. We implement a carefully sequenced, structured approach to introduce and reinforce mathematical vocabulary. Each lesson includes opportunities for children to explain or justify their mathematical reasoning, fostering strong communication skills.
  3. Problem Solving: At the core of our approach is mathematical problem-solving, serving as both the method and motivation for learning mathematics. As children accumulate knowledge of mathematical concepts, they can develop and test their problem-solving skills in every lesson, ultimately achieving a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

We follow the White Rose Maths long/medium term planning and small steps, as well as using resources from Power Maths to support our teaching. You can find all the relevant documents below.

We also use Times Table Rock Stars across the school as a way of encouraging our pupils to practise their times tables regularly, as we recognise the importance of being fluent in times tables for many other areas of mathematics. Children complete in regular competitions between classes to increase the enjoyment of learning their table facts.
